In “Search”, Hoicka uses brightly patterned and textured paint, she brings about both the excitement of youth and their insecurities about their lives as they are lost. They search for or long for: love, work, home life, and their communities…
Hoicka’s vibrant surreal paintings find humour in desperate and intimate soul-searching, revealing earnest longing, in a suddenly very public world. Characters perform their lives for others, their internet communities, and themselves. They are living their lives based on expectations instead of asking what they truly want.
These characters are in the thick of becoming adults, diving right in and not being sure if they are sinking or floating.
“Search” was presented at gallerywest in 2012.
